Combining Adjusting and Rehabilitation
There are three parts to truly correcting your spine and all it controls:
- Function—how well your joints move, muscle tone, ability to perform Activities of normal Daily Living (ADL), such as walking, lifting, bending to do dishes, run the vacuum, or bathe your kids.
- Neurological—how well the signal getting from the brain, through the spinal cord, out the nerves, and finally to all the parts of the body.
- Structural—the actual shape of the spine as measured on x-rays. (True Plane or Aligned X-rays)
So here is the challenge: adjustments restore function and are profoundly important for proper neurological balance, but adjustments alone cannot change the structure of the spine. This is because you have muscles that react, under nerve-controlled reflexes, to applied forces.
Adjusting a vertebra back into alignment is only a temporary improvement if that is all that is done. It takes rehabilitation to change the shape of the spine due to reflex muscle reactions that will automatically attempt to pull the spine back to the previous position.
The rehabilitation we use works with these muscle reflexes instead of against them to give you the results you want. Once the spine is adjusted into position, we teach the muscles how to hold this new position. Used together, your improvement will progress faster.
So, what about just doing the rehabilitation but no adjustments? The muscles will be fighting against joint immobility and loss of function that will slow if not stop the effectiveness of the rehabilitation.
One of the main tools we use to strengthening posture muscles is the Pettibon Body Weighting System.
Pettibon Cervical Traction Unit
When cervical traction is performed twice daily for the prescribed time (3-5 minutes) amazing changes will happen. Joint mobility and range of motion improve, stiffness reduces, neck curve restoration is accelerated, and pain is diminished.
The cervical traction is used twice per day from the time you start care and continues for as long as you want to enjoy the benefits of a healthy spine. Consistent use will enhance spinal joint health and mobility by warming and softening the ligaments, cartilage, and discs allowing the joints to move through a full, healthy range of motion. Additionally, it helps restore the normal neck curve (cervical lordosis).
Ligaments, discs, and joints have no blood supply (avascular). The only way they absorb nutrients and eliminate waste is through motion. The repetitive up and down action (or loading/unloading cycle) of the cervical traction acts like a pump moving nutrients in and waste materials out of the discs and joints. The mild stretching of the neck muscles also drives the remodeling of scar tissue towards a stronger and less pain sensitive neck.
The Home Rehabilitation Program is a synergistic combination of the Wobble Chair, Cervical Traction Unit, Pettibon Weighting System, and Spinal Molding Fulcrums to get you the fastest results possible. It works like this you warm up the spine by getting movement throughout the spine then strengthen the postural form with body weighting. Other home equipment/exercises may be prescribed as needed. Pettibon Wobble ChairWhen the wobble chair is used twice daily for as little as 5-9 minutes each time it works to restore normal metabolism to the discs, ligaments, and joints. Clinical cases have been reported and documented of spinal disc degeneration reversing! Improved joint mobility and range of motion reduces pain and stiffness. Most importantly, the wobble chair contributes to healthy brain and nervous system metabolism.
Therapeutic Wobble Chair™ It is designed to enhance spinal joint health and mobility by warming and softening the ligaments, cartilage, and discs allowing the joints to move through a full, healthy range of motion which brings fluid and nutrients into the joints and spinal discs. The wobble chair is used two (2) times per day from the time you start care and continues for as long as you want to enjoy the benefits of a healthy spine.
Ligaments, discs, and joints have no blood supply (avascular). The only way they get nutrients in and eliminate waste is through motion. The motion must be specific to affect the disc. The pivot point must be no larger than the center (nucleus) of the disc. Therefore balls, boards, and inflatable cushions will not improve disc conditions that the wobble chair will.
Nutrient delivery to discIn order for this to work with maximum effectiveness the motion must be done slowly enough for the disc to take in (imbibe) fluids and nutrients.
Moving your spine on the wobble chair will increase the circulation of the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord, the cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF). This fluid carries nutrients, neurotransmitters, and hormones that your brain and nerves need to be healthy. When these are circulated and refreshed by movement you will have a better mood and longer attention span. You will also find that your memory, focus, and cognitive function improve.
Erchonia Tendon Ligament Muscle StimulationThe Erchonia Tendon Ligament Muscle Stimulation is used during your office visits in the initial phase of care. Its purpose is to very quickly eliminate muscle splinting (or guarding) to help stop the self-perpetuating cycle of inflammation.
When your spine was injured the surrounding muscles began splinting (guarding) to protect the area from further injury. The problem is that when this process goes unchecked, the muscles squeeze so tight that they compromise the blood flow to the area. This causes more pain resulting in more splinting which, of course, continues to compromise blood flow. The real problem with this is the normal metabolic waste does not get eliminated and fresh nutrients do not get in. Imagine how bad it would feel to not eliminate waste (go to the bathroom) for an extended period.
Enter the Erchonia Tendon Ligament Muscle Stimulation with its unique vertical movement (almost all massage tools go side to side) set at a precise speed stimulates the nervous system to relax the muscles and allow blood to surge through very quickly. As the blood flow returns to normal all the trapped metabolic waste and inflammatory chemicals get pushed out of the muscles and surrounding soft tissues. Fresh nutrient delivery begins, and the healing process moves forward.
The only remaining challenge is ridding your body of the waste and chemicals. We recommend drinking plenty of water to assist with this process.
